KATHERINE MUNTER, PsyD MEd LP ATR-BC

Founder and Clinical Director

For as long as I can recall, I have used art and writing to help me process my thoughts and experiences. I found art to be such a powerful healing tool in my life that I chose to pursue a career in art therapy and clinical psychology. By utilizing what I have learned of art and therapy, I hope to assist others in exploring and expressing their creativity. I learn alongside my clients as we journey towards discovery, meaning, and self-actualization.

I have over 20 years of experience  working in mental health and wellness, and I have taught in a variety of academic and professional settings. I have an eclectic approach that includes, talk, creative expression, and mindfulness practice. Some areas of focus include life transitions, finding meaning and balance, growth, parenting, trauma, anxiety, ADHD, neurodivergence, cancer and chronic illness, and brain injury.

I hold a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Michigan School of Psychology (2013) and a Master of Education in Art Therapy from Wayne State University (2007). I'm a Clinical Psychologist (LP) and a Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC). I'm a member of the following professional organizations: American Psychological Association (APA), American Art Therapy Association (AATA), and Washtenaw Psychology Society (WPS).

I'm also a mother, nature lover, and I approach life with passionate curiosity.

No matter where life has taken me, it was the constant companionship of Art - whether through music, poetry or photography - that has helped me weather the worst of storms. And now that neuroscience is showing us why Art and Creativity have such an incredible impact on our brain and bodies, I see that this potent healing path is accessible to many more of us than we might think.

Using my science background, I work with clients to help them better understand their nervous system and to heal the important connections between brain, body, and environment. In session we explore these connections using visual colors, images, sound, movement, and many more sensory modalities so that clients can experience healing rather than just think about it.

I hold a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Art Therapy from Wayne State University (2023), as well as a Masters in Health Informatics from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (2015), and a Bachelors in Science in Neuroscience from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (2012). But more than my degrees, three things you should know about me is that I am a compassionate listener, an adventurous creative and a huge tea enthusiast!

My name is Natalie McCabe, and I am originally from Batchewana First Nation in Ontario, Canada. Even before I decided to pursue art as a career, I used it as a therapeutic tool. My Bachelor of Fine Art focused in sculptural design because I wanted to continue to explore any and all art mediums. I wandered into the world of museum studies through art, and that showed me the reverence and monetary value art can have. I worked in museums throughout my undergrad career but found myself more interested in the lives of the artists behind the art and why they create art. The entrance into an art therapy career has always felt very natural to me because of how much comfort, perspective and mindfulness art has always offered me.

As an art therapist, my approach is humanistic with a family centered connection. The humbling experience of parenthood brought the awareness of a nurturing patience and a capacity to change course quickly.  My studies throughout my student career have focused on adolescent to young adult depression and suicidal ideation, particularly in a First Nation/ Indigenous populations.

As a professional, I continue to learn and grow to allow myself greater flexibility for the clients that enter my practice. My professional experience has given me opportunity to work with adults with substance use disorder, young children from Kindergarten through young adults with behavioral, mental and emotional disorders, as well as physical disabilities. This work of caring for others can be challenging but makes my soul feel full.
