What can I expect from a therapy session
Initially, we’ll discuss your history, presenting issues, and goals. Together, we’ll decide on a modality that could help you begin to explore and learn more about yourself. This may involve a combination of talk, art making, and mindfulness techniques. We're available in person at our office in Ann Arbor or via teletherapy.
Do you accept insurance
We accept the following insurance: Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Blue Care Network, Aetna, and United. We're happy to verify your insurance coverage with your provider before your first session if that could be helpful to you.
If you don't have insurance or would prefer to pay privately, we charge $175 per hour and offer a sliding fee scale. We can provide you with invoices if you are interested in seeking insurance reimbursement for our services as an out-of-network provider.
Is art therapy just for artists
Absolutely not! Working in a nonverbal medium such as art can be beneficial for individuals of all ages. The vast majority of our clients do not consider themselves artists. Art making can assist you in finding creative ways to overcome challenges and offer insight into other areas to explore. It can provide new perspectives as well as give you a space to relax and experience the healing properties involved in creation.
We have worked with individuals of all ages and skill levels, including those recovering from strokes or other brain injuries who lost fine motor skills. Art truly is accessible to everyone.
What if I can’t draw
The focus of art therapy is on discovery, meaning-making, creation, and personal growth. It’s the process and not the final product which is vital. Children use art supplies without hesitation, but many of us stop during adolescence. The non-verbal aspects of art making can tap into childhood memories or ideas that aren’t easy to express verbally. It has the unique ability to bypass our barriers and help us to see ourselves in a new light.
What we create in therapy is private. During that process, you may find that you have skills you’d like to explore and develop, but the pieces you create are yours to share only if you decide to do so.
Do you analyze my drawings
We believe that growth and healing comes through the process, and that the meaning is derived by you. We can however offer drawing assessments if we believe it may be helpful, particularly with children or those who have more difficulty communicating verbally.
What do I need for teletherapy
You’ll need access to a computer or phone with a video camera. We'll send you a link to make an account on Simple Practice, our telehealth site. There, you can make appointments, access teletherapy sessions, and send messages through your patient portal. As it will be teletherapy, you will be able to have the session from anywhere. It’s preferable to find a space where you can be private.
If you would like to use art as part of your treatment, we’ll discuss what art supplies you have on hand and what media you’d like to explore.
How do I start
You can contact us to set up an appointment and discuss payment options. We'll send you a link to fill out intake questions prior to your session.
We look forward to working with you!
